“Spread the Wealth,” universal healthcare. Don’t Obama’s policies sound pretty socialist?
Bill S asked:
Socialism has failed multiple times in history and is contradictory to the capitalism and freedom that America has been built upon. Why would we elect a president who holds socialist idealogies?

Yeah – just like this bailout.
Makes me sick too but when Wall Street fat cats get welfare – which is what this bailout package is – nobody presently in office has any business complaining.

Yeah, why would we elect someone who wants the gov’t to buy home loans…a truly socialist move. Wait, that’s McCain…….
icanyes on November 7, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Democrats, all of us, have always fought for universal health care. But it’s no more socialist than Medicare or Social Security.
FDR was the most socialistic president we have ever had yet some of his plans and ideas are still alive and well today.
Citizen of the Cosmos on November 10, 2009 at 2:55 am
You’re right, we should just give all our money to CEOs while our infrastructure falls apart, then take the blame as they flee an economy in ruins thanks to their mismanagement.

It is all good. It will backfire on them.

socialised healthcare is alive and well in europe and still its a LIE obama will socialise it. you won’t have long lines and you won’t have to wait for healthcare.
with obama’s plan, you can keep your current healthcare.
that doesn’t sound like socialism to me.
Socially Awkward on November 17, 2009 at 6:39 pm
You Republicans love using the word “socialism”. Why? Because he used the term “spread the wealth” as in not having high class & severely poor low class Americans. Giving everyone an opportunity to get higher education. Sounds horrific!
Plus, I want to keep my current health care plan. Which I CAN with Obama’s plan. Doesn’t sound socialist to me.

“Spread the wealth” is a paraphrase of
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

VA hospital
Medicare
unemployment
SSI

Not Obama doing.
If you don’t like it, don’t use them.

By your definition
Christianity must be socialism.
Mike on November 22, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Bill… This is nothing new. He’s a typical Democrat.

phenobulous on November 23, 2009 at 8:04 pm
didnt hear you complaining about the socialist bailout a few weeks ago.
where were you then?
Kenny on November 26, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Even though Barack is not a socialist however his policies are much better then the real socialist Bush/Mccain who spyed on us without our consent
He spent 700 billion of our tax money to save rich wall street people
He spends our tax money to fund other countries
He sends our brave men and women to fight illegitimate wars without our consent
Bush/Mccain are the real socialist and please tell me how will Mccain plans to pay off the national debt of 13 trillion without raising taxes of rich people who had a tax cut of 300 billion in the last 8 yrs ?

Yes Terrorist / Traitor Barack Hussein Obama wants to create a welfare state that depends on him to decide who gets what and how much.
Don M on December 1, 2009 at 6:14 am
Yes, they sound very socialist. That’s why Obama’s election, coupled with a Democrat controlled congress, will do grave harm to our country.

Socialist, Schmocialist, I don’t care if he’s a three-eyed Martian, he’ll still do a better job than McCain.
By the way…..
It was a “socialist” president named FDR that pulled America’s *** out of the fire the last time we were in this kind of trouble. Works for me!
mike on December 4, 2009 at 5:10 pm
It is socialism, no matter how many times he refutes it.
How people in this country could be so swooned by his bullcrap rhetoric is quite pathetic.
Clark Kent on December 6, 2009 at 12:21 pm
He will get elected mostly due to the failure of the Bush administration.
He will probably discover all of his promises are not possible to deliver and will be much more conservative once he gets elected. It is the old politician game of telling whatever lies it takes to get elected.
If he screws up things worse than they already are, he won’t be reelected so he will probably take a more rational course than his campaign indicates. He seems to be too intelligent to believe all the B.S. he proposes.
Moose on December 7, 2009 at 7:20 pm
That’s because they are Socialist.
Socialism has already enslaved an entire economic class of people here in the US. That’s exactly what it was intended to do. So much for your freedoms. Half of our state and federal taxes go toward handouts already. ALL of the handouts are designed specifically keep the poor and underprivileged dependent upon big government.
Good observation and thanks!
G.H.CURTISS on December 7, 2009 at 7:57 pm
The scary part is he will have to **** the middle class to get all of his agenda in. This includes the $845 billion he plans to give away to developing nations well also giving away $2.3 trillion to the fight on global warming!
InReality01 on December 10, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Of course they do because they are.
It boils down to this. Americans that want the government to provide for them (ie, take from other Americans) will vote for Obama and those Americans that want the government to leave them alone and not take the fruits of their labor to give to other Americans will vote for McCain.
It is a sad day that Americans are voting for candidates based on how they will steal from other Americans to give them things but that is where we are at. Eventually, when we have more Americans not paying taxes then paying taxes and more Americans voting to get things from the treasury then the rest then our nation is done. When the majority of Americans can take from the minority then the minority will no longer produce because there is no incentive and we will have a bunch of lazy people that have no appreciation for anything.
Obama is a disaster waiting to happen……. especially with the radical Democrats in charge in Congress. Obama is the most radical of them all.
All we can hope is that there are more politically educated Americans with common sense voting then mindless robots made up of naive college students, government employees, people get a check from the government and anti-American socialists.
** A note to some of the other posters **
Many of you are talking about taxes and I think we need to understand a few things. Businesses at the end of the day do not pay taxes, people pay taxes. If you tax a company it can only result in a few things……. less jobs, less productivity, less research, less pay & benefits, less return to shareholders and higher prices for services & products.
Businesses are not monsters that roam the countryside. Businesses are all made up of people and they produce products & services that people need or want. You can not “punish” a company without punishing people. You can not “tax” a company without taxing people.
The government can not pick & choose which businesses will do well or should do well. Our government is here to protect us, keep us free, provide basic infrastructure and only tax enough to pay for those essential services, nothing more & nothing less. Our government is not here, nor is our tax code, to punish any individual or group of individuals. We have lost sight of this and we need realize this.
Every dollar that the government takes from us is power that it takes. Every time the government expands we lose freedom. We can not allow our government to take sides, it is suppose to be neutral and our laws & policies are suppose to be applied equally (not progressively).
Now, you may disagree with this but then you are going against the very reasons our nation was founded.
Our Founding Fathers formed this nation and setup a framework for it based on very specific ideals & values. Low taxation and maximizing individual freedom were the basic principles of their beliefs and they should be that of our today.
Remember, there is nothing preventing the government from going after you or your favorite cause/issue/business next. This is exactly why we can not let our emotions dictate our policies. We must always stick to our founding values & principles.
God Bless America

The basic structure of our military, and the benefits they afford it’s members and families, that’s all Obama wants for this country.
He is planning a branch to rebuild America with alternate energy projects. This is based on FDRs policies and they brought us into the 21st century with Hydroelectric. Look at Las Vegas, Do you see them worried about energy, or a failing Economy?
Think about it, Obama wants to give the disenfranchised the chance to work with pride to get their welfare, they must work.
It is not as sinister a plan as GOP tries to spin, here him out, Obama worked hard for all he got. These projects will reduce our dependency on oil. Sure they are expensive now, but so was Hoover Dam, and TVA,
but it put the down and out to work. Obama plans solar and wind and wave farms. There are a lot of people now who are broke with families to support, and this number grows daily.
I want a job building wind turbines and get benefits as part of Energy Force. I am sick of PB+J and ramen noodles.
Our military members and family already have socialism, I know I am a vet. Let Obama build a force to make the above work for America,
I am sure he will tap the expertise of his opponents and this country to make it work.

Call it whatever you wish, but you can’t change the Facts, McCain’s plan is the same as Bush, welfare tax refunds for Big Business. How would you like to report 1 billion in earnings and get a 1.7 billion tax refund? Tax them, then they will pay better wages to the middle class, giving them a deduction in the Taxes they must pay.
Now compare more of the same in McCain’s tax plan for the Rich, and Obama’s tax plan for the Middle Class. call it whatever.
connor on December 15, 2009 at 8:52 am
You are not understanding what Obama’s statement meant. Instead, you are falling for the Republican spin on it.
Here’s a great story from Fox News (of all places!) on what he really plans to do:
“Socialism!” he said incredulously to a crowd of more than 10,000. “It’s kind of hard to figure how Warren Buffet endorsed me. Colin Powell endorses me and John McCain thinks I’m passing socialism,” he said with more than a hint of disbelief.
Obama explained that he would implement a tax cut for those making under $250,000 – 95% of Americans. “These are the teachers and the janitors who work in our schools. They’re the cops and firefighters who keep us safe. They’re the waitresses who work double shifts, the cashiers at Wal-Marts, the plumbers fighting for the American Dream. John McCain thinks that giving these Americans a break is socialism. Well I call it opportunity, and there is nothing more American than that,” he said.
Obama turned from defense to offense, saying that if John McCain wants to have a debate about redistributing wealth – just look at the Republican nominee’s plan. It’s McCain who would give tax breaks to those who don’t need it and don’t deserve it, Obama said – tax cuts for Fortune 500 CEOs, billions to Wall Street banks, and tax breaks for big oil companies.
“Let’s talk about the 100 million middle-class Americans who John McCain doesn’t want to give a single dime of tax relief. Don’t tell me that CEOs and oil companies deserve a tax break before the men and women who are working overtime day after day and still can’t pay the bills,” Obama said as the crowd cheered.
Obama asked those in the crowd to raise their hands if they made under $250,000 and then promised them – nearly every single person in the arena – they would not see a dime of tax increases. For those making more than that, he promised to put rates back where they were under Bill Clinton’s administration.
“Did that feel like socialism to you? Rich folks were still making out just fine back then, but we were able to make sure that ordinary folks got a little bit of help without blowing a hole through the budget and piling up mountains of debt like George W. Bush has done and like John McCain has supported,” he blasted. “We have tried it George Bush’s way. We’ve given more and more to those with the most and hoped that prosperity would trickle down to everyone else. And guess what? It didn’t work. So it’s time try something new,” he said.
And like that tennis player who knows he’s about to score, Obama said, “He can call me any name he wants- but I know what’s right and what he’s talking about is not right, it’s not change – that’s why we’re gonna beat him in this election on November 4th.”
